Monday 1st September, Lovely Lake Elphinstone

Leaving Finch Hatton, we had a short drive to Marian for a shopping and fuel stop. We then headed to a new place for us to visit and stay the night, Lake Elphinstone. The drive took us under two hours and we arrived, set up right on the lake frontage and had some lunch. Lake Elphinstone is a beautiful, natural lake approximately 3.5 km long and 1km wide. located in the Isaac Region (Central Queensland). There are numerous mines in the surrounding areas and huge cattle stations. The camping area here is free, with lovely clean amenities, including flushing toilets. The showers are cold but we’ll just shower in the van tonight. Lyn I were keen to kayak around the beautiful lake and set off after lunch. My kayaking app said we had kayaked for 8.5km. The main entertainment wildlife wise, was watching the numerous black swans taking off after swimming in the lake. They are so funny as they flap their wings and run along the top of the water. Part of the lake is situated on a large cattle farm and we saw many cattle, grazing on the banks of the lake. There were quite a few calves with their mothers too. Very cute. When I returned with the kayak, Rob had found a floating golf ball and he had a few drives of this ball out into the lake. I was tasked with kayaking out and locating the floating ball and returning to Rob on the bank. We did this for a few times until I had had enough. We sat outside and enjoyed the peace and calmness of the lake. Around 6pm, a group of cattle just wandered along the bank past all the vans and campers, quite unperturbed by the many people out and about.
