Our next destination was Mirani, another of our favourite places in Queensland! This is our third visit here in the last few years so you can tell it must be a favourite. It only took 35 minutes to drive to Mirani and we were set up in the beautiful park, soon after 10.30am. The council run park, is located next to the pool, has beautiful amenities and immaculate grass and slab sites. Lyn and Steve arrived soon after us and set up on the site next-door. (This was Lyn and Steve’s first visit to this area.) The weather here is stunning, with temperatures in the high 20’s, little wind and clear skies. We spent the next few hours around the caravan site, relaxing and doing jobs. Lyn and I went for a wonderful kayak in the afternoon on the nearby Pioneer River. The boys helped us launch from Platypus Beach. We had lots of fun kayaking upriver and encountered two areas of rapids, making it through the first but deciding the second was a bit too difficult. On our return we watched out for any platypuses but they were being shy today. I had seen them in this area during past visits. We did see 2 snakes, one being brightly coloured, as well as a lizard and of course various birds. A full, long cane train crossed the bridge soon after we set off and an empty, long cane train went over the same bridge in the opposite direction as we were returning……probably the same train as there is a sugar mill in the nearby town of Marian! Returning to the beach after our kayaking, the boys had set up chairs, tables and drinks and nibbles. We enjoyed the late afternoon relaxing by the river and watching the changing sky as the sun set. Returning to the caravan park, we found out that the whole town did not have water. Luckily, we have some in our tanks, so we’ll be fine hopefully, depending how long the issue goes for. An hour later the water was back on!!
