Tuesday 26th August, Kayaking on Kinchant

Lyn and I had hoped that conditions would allow us to kayak on the nearby Kinchant Dam and luckily, they did. We once again packed a picnic lunch and headed out to the dam. The boys helped us launch and we enjoyed the magnificent scenery of the dam and it’s surrounds. We kayaked in some quiet and calm areas, amongst some beautiful water-lilies while watching nearby cattle and horses feeding on the grass. Some were even in the water. The bird life was incredible. In the kayaks we followed two black swans who were out swimming with three little cygnets. They led us to an area of the dam that looked like a gorge with high stone outcrops, cliffs and walls. It was quite spectacular and the water in this area was calm and quiet. We presumed that this area was used for mining the rocks used in the rock wall for the dam. It was soon time to return and the wind had picked up but we managed to make it back to the boat ramp. The boys had been off doing some shopping and were back to greet us. We enjoyed a picnic lunch before heading off to the nearby Eton Range Lookout. The roads in Queensland vary quite considerably and the road to this lookout was extremely impressive. Up a steep winding hill, it had hairpin turns but was 2 lanes for both ways. The boys suspected that the nearby mining companies may have contributed to the construction of this road as it was used by many long and heavy trucks. The look out afforded us good views across the valley back to Mirani.
