Thursday 21st August, Rolling around Rockhampton

A beautiful warm morning greeted us when we awoke today. As we have previously been to Rockhampton a few times in the past, we decided to visit Mt Archer, an area we had not visited before. We took a narrow, steep, winding road to the top of Mt Archer and then completed the beautiful Nurim Circuit Elevated Boardwalk. The boardwalk extended 25metres off the side of Mt Archer. It gave us spectacular views of the city and the Fitzroy River. The walk also took us through beautiful thick bushland and forest with many display boards giving us excellent information about the flora and fauna of the area. From here we drove to a huge shopping mall and did some shopping. Rob had quite a few “little jobs” to do back at the caravan and to buy a few bits and pieces at various places. In the afternoon, Rob completed all his jobs while I walked to the nearby North Rockhampton Cemetery. This cemetery was huge and was established in 1879. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the most cared for cemetery and being so large, it was a little difficult to find the older parts of it. (It currently contains over 25,000 graves!) I was interested in the special war graves section of the cemetery. In 1943 there were at least two major wartime air disasters which occurred in the Central Queensland region, only four weeks apart in November and December. A total of 50 people were killed in these disasters, including numerous US military personnel. The Australians had been buried in a special section of this cemetery.
