Tuesday 12th August, Great Golf Games and Peaceful Paddling

Rob was up extra early this morning as he wanted to be out on the South West Rocks Golf course before the start of the women’s competition. I stayed in bed and read my book while doing 3 loads of washing because it was a near perfect day weather-wise! I had finished all the jobs around the van and was going to go for a walk, when Rob phoned to say he had nearly finished his round. Rob enjoyed his golf and did well. He mentioned that the course had sustained a lot of storm damage a week and ½ ago. Large trees had been brought down and there was obviously a lot of water around the course. When he returned to the van, I checked, and the tides were perfect for me to go for a kayak in the nearby Back Creek. Rob helped me launch the kayak from the banks of the creek which the caravan park backs on to. I thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful experience, especially exploring the mangrove area. I followed the creek to the sea and this was the only tricky part of the journey. The out-going tide was rushing through the narrow channel to the sea so I didn’t spend too long there or else I would have ended up in the sea! Following all this morning action we had a relaxing afternoon, with a stroll into the town, a visit to the Maritime Precinct, including the Pilot House and Boatman’s Cottages.  A Museum, Visitor Centre and Art and Craft shops were located in some of the Cottages. The Museum contained many artefacts, photos and books about the marine history of South West Rocks and the surrounding areas. The cottage we visited had also been preserved and maintained to give people an idea of what it was like living in the cottage for the boatmen.
