Saturday 13th September, Goodies, Glass and Galleries

Rob had done some investigating and had discovered that a Farmers Market was going to be held at the EPIC (Exhibition Park In Canberra) centre which just happened to be located across the road from the caravan park. We decided to head to the market to do some shopping and have some breakfast. We enjoyed breakfast, coffee and purchased some fruit and meat. The markets were both extensive and attractive. There were quite a few plant and flower stalls, filled with buckets of brightly coloured blooms. We had booked into a heritage tour of the Canberra Glassworks which was located in the Kingston Powerhouse and headed to the area after our visit to the markets. We arrived early and enjoyed walking around the canals and marina of the Kingston Foreshore. This is a lovely area with many waterfront apartments, cafes and eateries. Many people were out enjoying the beautiful weather. Unfortunately, when we went into the Glassworks building, we were informed that our tour had been cancelled due to the guide being ill. We couldn’t really complain as this was a free tour. Anyway, we spent a lot of time in the galleries looking at some beautiful pieces of glass art. We were able to do a self-guided tour of the Powerhouse and then spent time watching several glassblowers and artists working in the workshops. There was an excellent viewing deck for this purpose. Following this, we drove out to the Canberra Airport where we were picking up our friend, Pat. Pat and I had organised this as we wanted to attend Floriade, which is on in Canberra at the present time. After collecting Pat from the airport, we called in to her hotel which was next to the airport so she could check-in. We then headed to the National Portrait Museum to look at an exhibition called “In Bloom”. The collection featured famous people and their connections to flowers and plants. Some were good, some interesting and some left us wondering. We finished the day with a delightful dinner at the Atrium Restaurant.
