It rained off and on during the night but we were dry and warm in the van. We did some washing in the morning, before heading to the small village of Smiths Lake for a look around and coffee at the Frothy Coffee Boatshed, another great name for a coffee shop! This café was located on the banks of Smiths Lake and had lovely views. As we left our caravan park it started to rain heavily but by the time we reached the café, about 10 minutes later, the rain had disappeared and the lake was like glass. From here we drove towards the town of Forster which located on Wallis Lake and at the junction of several rivers, where they empty into the sea. Stopping at Cape Hawke lookout, we went for an invigorating walk up 420 steps and then another 50 at the lookout. Rob just loved it….not. Unfortunately, with the overcast skies, the views were not that stunning but it was good exercise for us anyway, We drove on to Foster and had a beautiful lunch at the Blue Peter Boatshed café, overlooking another glorious waterway. Following lunch we needed more exercise and so did a hike to Bennetts head Lookout. Here, Rob was extremely impressed with the brick-layers, who had built the brick pylons which held up one of the lookouts. It would not have been a job for the fainthearted. Returning to the van we headed out for another walk to the nearby Sandbar Beach. We were very lucky weatherwise. Speaking to our barista at the Frothy Coffee Boatshed, she said that today was the first day that the business was open after closing for several days due to damage from the floods two weeks ago. She explained that the whole area had been without power for 5 days and there had been major issues with the sewerage systems. When we arrived at the caravan park yesterday, there were two women, cleaning and restocking all the freezers and fridges in the shop. The explained that they’d been without power for four days and not having a generator as back-up, had lost most of the stock.
