With little or no wind this morning, it seemed like the ideal time to take the kayak out on the lake. I enjoyed a beautiful 2 ½ hour kayak in almost perfect conditions on the clear waters of the lake. Once again, the boat ramps were busy with people preparing to head out to fish. I saw many beautiful birds but didn’t take too many photos as every time I took my phone out the birds would fly away. I did manage to watch and take one photo of what I think is a Forest Kingfisher. It was a very small bird with beautiful blue colourings. Another bird that hung around for a photo was a Great Cormorant. The water-lilies here are just starting to open and I saw many gorgeous purple and mauve lilies in the water. One of the areas I kayak in today is obviously a spot where dead fish end up, probably due to the flow of water and the wind. I counted over 20 dead, large barramundi in this area. Following my kayaking expedition and lunch, Rob and I drove to a very interesting old train tunnel. The Boolboonda Tunnel was constructed between 1883-84, to open up agriculture and mining. It was 192 metres long and is the longest unsupported railway tunnel in Queensland. You can drive and or walk through the tunnel. We did both and when walking (with a torch), we were able to hear and observe the “Large Bent winged Bat colony that have made the cave their home.
