After a relaxing start to the day, we all decided to go in to Emerald to explore. Lyn and Steve kindly volunteered to drive us in in their vehicle, so we were all together. While driving down the main street in Emerald, Rob saw the local bakery advertising the best pies in CQ (Central Queensland). He stored that away for later. We walked to the Emerald Railway building, a charming old fashioned wooden building built in1900 and still being used for the odd trains that come through. As far as passenger trains are concerned, a train travels twice a week from Brisbane to Longreach and the Emerald station is on this line. We then walked to the Emerald Botanic Gardens. The gardens were full of large palms, gum trees and plants that can grow in the area without needing extra watering. Rob had fun playing on some of the impressive pieces of equipment in the children’s playground. We walked back to the main part of town and Steve and Rob both tried a pie from the bakery and Rob thought it was almost perfect! Lyn and I enjoyed visiting the art gallery at the Council Chambers and we were impressed with the art on display. Following this, we did a little bit of shopping before returning to Lake Maraboon. Lyn and I went for a beautiful kayak late in the afternoon. We found a spot that I had nick-named “turtle corner” on a previous visit here. We sat quietly and watched large numbers of turtles popping their heads up out of the water. It was so clam and peaceful and a great way to finish the day.
